On May 25, 2012 BSS will host MomentEM, an event in memory of Emma Federer, an athletic and spirited member of the BSS community.

Tickets will be sold for the next two weeks (starting April 30) for $5 at lunch in the BSS Student Centre. Tickets may also be sold at the event if available and through various COSSOT student representatives.

MomentEM will include an exciting game of softball between BSS and UCC, a BBQ, live entertainment, and much more! Please come out to support and enjoy a great night in memory of a great friend.

Each spring the Visual and Performing Arts students of BSS proudly present the artistic products of their many hours of hard work and creativity for their teachers, family, friends and neighbours in an evening of celebration and sharing.This year BSS Arts Night will take place on May 16 between 4:00 pm and 8:15 pm. 

The hallways and gathering spaces of the School will be filled with the sounds, movement and images of adventurous and bold expression. Whether it’s a musical concert, a photographic exhibition, a multimedia art exhibit or a dramatic performance, you are invited to enjoy and engage with all the arts and artists of BSS.

The BSS Parent Association is producing a fundraising cookbook called Girls Can Cook Anything, expected to be ready in time for Deck the Hall. They invite you to submit your favourite recipes to make it a wonderful collection of favourites from the BSS community. Read more. Download the submission form.

Enjoy a great evening of entertainment at the BSS Theatre as the Middle School students (with a little help from Grade 9 to 12 students) perform Denise Deegan’s Daisy Pulls It Off.

Tickets are $5 or PWYC (ticket sales going towards the BSS Endowment) and are available at the BSS Box Office during regular sales hours (12:30-1pm and 3:45-4:15) or at the door.

Congratulations go out to the Grade 6 students for their Global Innovation Award Top 20 qualification. The Rice Girls’ submission, the rice.kept.safe pot is one of only two teams from Ontario. The team will competing with the hope that they might actually get to transfer their project into a reality. In her latest book, Allah, Liberty and Love, author Irshad Manji encourages us to speak up, to assert our individuality. She urges everyone to question, challenge, agitate, and to take that extra step toward compassionate citizenship in a diverse world. On April 16, Irshad spent the day at The Bishop Strachan School to talk with students on leading change, behaving with moral courage, and rethinking our world to make it a better place for girls and women. At the end of the day, she said, “I learned a lot about leadership from the girls at BSS.” We are grateful to The Hill Canadian Author Fund and the Anne E Tottenham Chair in Canadian Studies Fund for their support of this event.

Spencer West speaks to BSS students about making a difference

BSS is excited to welcome the very inspirational Spencer West, a Me to We speaker who has overcome many challenges and obstacles in his life to become a powerful influence on the youth of today. On Monday January 30, Spencer will be addressing the students of BSS in both the Junior and Senior Schools.

As part of Global awareness week the student committee would like extend an invitation to the parents of BSS. Please join us this Monday from 9:45 am to 10:45 am in the Warren Road Gym to hear Spencer speak with our Senior School.

Congratulations to the Grade 6 Girls who participated in the FLL (First Lego League) Robotics Competition. Please support their entry to get their fabulous invention patented as part of the FLL Global Innovation Award contest! Their RiceKept Safe Bowl will help people in developing countries, keeping cooked rice from developing a potentially serious bacteria from being left at room temperature.
