The Senior Kindergarten students invited Ms. Grzybowski, the Junior School Atelierista (a teacher who has specialized training in the visual arts), into the classroom to share her expertise in painting techniques. She brought with her some fresh cut sunflowers as a focus for the girls to observe and represent what they saw with paint. One of the suggestions made by Ms. Grzybowski was to touch the sunflowers before painting in order to feel the textures and observe the outline of the shapes.
Visual Representations of Sunflowers
The paintings the girls made to express their observations were based on instinct and previous experience with paint. The paintings reflect the effort the girls used to capture the direction of the flowers, their own point of view and the angle from which they viewed the sunflowers.
“I looked at it and painted what I see. Artists paint what they see.”
Interpretations
The artists reflect on many different angles and perspectives in their paintings. In these works you will notice there is a bird’s eye view, an exploration of detailed petals, side angles, transparent vases, and even the importance of sunlight as it shines through the classroom window.
