Board of Governors
Sarah Kavanagh, Chair
Sarah Kavanagh is a Commissioner of the Ontario Securities Commission and former Vice Chair, Investment Banking and Co-Head of Diversified Industries at Scotia Capital. Ms. Kavanagh has extensive corporate finance experience in both Canada and the U.S. and has been a leader in advancing women in the capital markets business. Sarah holds an MBA from Harvard and a BA in Economics from Williams College. She previously served as Chair of the BSS Board of Trustees, and her three daughters are graduates of the School.
Kenny Albert
Kenny Albert is an Executive Vice President of Kilmer Group, where his primary role is to extend and diversify the company’s interests in the sports, entertainment and media sectors. Prior to joining Kilmer, Mr. Albert served for 13 years as Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Canada Games Company Limited, one of Canada’s largest toy and game distributors. Mr. Albert is actively involved in the community and has served on several not for profit and corporate boards. He joined the BSS Board of Governors in 2011 and is a parent at the School.
David Cynamon
David Cynamon is Executive Chairman and Founder of K2 Pure Solutions. He started his first successful venture at age 17, and by age 24 he was CEO of an early pioneer in the Internet, the TSE listed HAV-INFO Computers. In 1995, he acquired controlling interest in a single Household Cleaners plant called KIK Corporation and turned it into a leading manufacturer of consumer products in the household, personal care and over-the-counter drug categories. Mr. Cynamon is actively involved in the community, serving on several not for profit boards. He joined the BSS Board of Governors in 2011 and is a parent at the School.
Mark Davis
Mark Davis has been President and CEO of Chemtrade Logistics Income Fund since leading its IPO in 2001. Mr. Davis has sat on a number of TSX public company boards and has acted as both Chair of the Audit and Corporate Governance Committees. He holds a law degree from Osgoode Hall. Mr. Davis has been a BSS Governor since October 2010 and is a parent at the School.
Wendy CHONG Edgell ’94
Wendy CHONG Edgell ’94 is a communications consultant, specializing in presentation skills coaching. Her professional experience also includes KPMG Corporate Finance, AT Kearney and business development at Artez Interactive, a software company serving the not-for-profit sector. Ms. Chong Edgell holds an MBA from the Rotman School of Management, and a Bachelor of Arts and Science from McMaster University. She is a BSS Old Girl and has served as a Governor since 2001. Prior to joining the Board of Governors, she was a member of the BSS Board of Trustees.
Andrea ODETTE-Federer ’79, Ex-Officio
Andrea ODETTE-Federer ’79 is Co-Chair of the BSS Parent Association for 2011/2012. She is a BSS Old Girl and current parent at the School, and her sister, Anne Odette-Kaye, is also an Old Girl from the Class of 1976. Ms. Federer and her husband, Andrew, are generous supporters and active volunteers at the School; Ms. Federer is also a member of the Old Girls’ Executive Committee and Mr. Federer serves as a BSS Trustee.
Tony Gaffney
Tony Gaffney is Managing Partner, Toronto for Accenture Inc., and previously led Accenture’s Canadian Outsourcing business. Prior to this, Mr. Gaffney worked with BCE Inc., serving as President and CEO of Bell Nexxia and President and CEO of BCE Emergis. He holds an engineering degree and an MA from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Mr. Gaffney has been a BSS Governor since 2007 and is a parent at the School.
Anne SMALLMAN Gallagher ’81, Ex-Officio
Anne SMALLMAN Gallagher ’81 is a BSS Old Girl and Co-Chair of the Old Girls’ Executive Committee (OGEC) alongside Gabrielle Crisante ’84. She has worked in finance at Barclays de Zoote Wedd in London, Citibank in New York and Toronto, as well as a second career in the antique world at Sotheby’s. Ms. Gallagher has an extensive family legacy at BSS including her daughter, who is a current student at the School, her sister, Catherine SMALLMAN Grant ’84, who is Co-Chair of the BSS Parent Association, nieces, cousins, and great grandmother. Her mother, Lois Smallman, was a past Trustee. Ms. Gallagher has been a BSS Governor since October 2009.
Robert Grundleger
Since his arrival in Canada in 1974, Robert Grundleger has served as a senior executive at top Canadian investment firms, before co-founding Groundlayer Capital Inc., a Toronto-based investment management firm, in 2002. Mr. Grundleger holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. He has been a Governor since 2003 and is a parent at the School.
Gwen Harvey
Gwen Harvey is President and owner of BridgeWater Family Wealth Services. She has worked with established families who face the complexities inherent in multigenerational wealth. Ms. Harvey is actively involved in the community and sits on the boards of several not for profit organizations. She has been a BSS Governor since October 2009 and is a parent at the School.
Clay Horner
Clay Horner is a nationally and internationally recognized leading advisor for mergers and acquisitions in Canada. He is the Toronto based Chair of Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP. Mr. Horner has extensive experience in counselling senior management and Boards of Directors of leading public and private corporations. He holds a BA from Queen’s University, an LLB from the University of Toronto, and an LLM from Harvard Law School. Mr. Horner has been a BSS Governor since 2008 and is a parent at the School.
Adele Imrie
Adele Imrie is a Chartered Accountant and the Vice President of Finance of Forum Equity Partners Inc., a commercial real estate development company specializing in public/private partnership projects. She has spent over 20 years in real estate development. Ms. Imrie holds an Honours BA from the University of Toronto and completed the Diploma of Investigative and Forensic Accounting at U of T Mississauga in collaboration with the Rotman School of Management. She is an active volunteer in the community and has served on independent school and not for profit boards. Her daughter is a graduate of BSS.
Roxanne Joyal
Roxanne Joyal is a founding staff member of Free The Children and Co-CEO of Me to We. She leads Free The Children’s social and economic empowerment initiatives in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Sierra Leone and South Africa. She also spearheads Me to We Artisans, an alternative income initiative in Kenya and India, which seeks to empower women through micro-enterprise. In her work with Me to We, Ms. Joyal established Me to We’s keystone volunteer facility Bogani, a first-of-its-kind facility, designed to educate and engage youth and adults through international volunteer adventures. She holds a degree in International Relations from Stanford, and as a Rhodes Scholar, completed a law degree at Oxford University. Ms. Joyal has been a BSS Governor since 2010.
Timothy Lazaris
Timothy Lazaris is the President and CEO of Red Sky Capital Management, an alternative asset management company based in Toronto, Canada. Prior to Red Sky, Mr. Lazaris spent 12 years as a Partner and Director of GMP Capital and was a founding and managing partner of GMP Investment Management. He holds both CA and CFA designations and is a graduate of the University of Toronto (St. Michael’s College). Mr. Lazaris has been a BSS Governor since October 2010 and spent three years as a Trustee. He is a parent at the School.
Kate Lyons, Ex-Officio
Kate Lyons is a senior partner at Goodmans LLP, where she dedicates her practice to representing both private and public sector clients in municipal and environmental law. Her practice includes obtaining permits and approvals required for the development of land, often in situations where there are disparate public, private and institutional stakeholders. Ms. Lyons holds an LLB from the University of Toronto. An active volunteer in the community, she has served on several not for profit boards. Ms. Lyons is Chair of the BSS Board of Trustees. She is the mother of a current BSS student and a BSS graduate.
Heather Nicol
Heather Nicol has diverse experience across the corporate and not for-profit sectors. She has held senior financial roles including CFO for the MaRS Discovery District as well as EVP for an investment company specializing in pharmaceutical royalties. She was also the CFO for Chapters Online, taking it public and helping it achieve national leadership. She also has several years’ experience in investment banking. Ms. Nicol currently serves as a director on the board of Genworth FMICC, as well as three not-for-profit organizations, and has served on a number of other boards. She has been a BSS Governor since October 2009 and is a parent at the School.
Anton Rabie
Anton Rabie is the President, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Spin Master Ltd. After graduating in 1994 from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, Mr. Rabie and his partners started Spin Master. Since then, Spin Master has grown into the third largest children’s consumer products and entertainment company in North America. Outside of Spin Master, Mr. Rabie is actively involved in the community, serving on several not-for-profit boards. He joined the BSS Board of Governors in 2011 and is a parent at the School.
Bruce Rothney
Bruce Rothney is the President and Country Head (Canada) for Barclays Capital. He has 23 years of leadership, general management, client coverage and transaction experience in investment banking and financial services. In addition to being a Chartered Accountant (FCA), he holds an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business (MacIntyre Scholar) and a B Comm. from the University of Manitoba. Mr. Rothney serves on several corporate and not for profit boards, including Chair of Canada’s Walk of Fame. He joined BSS’s Board of Governors in 2005 and is currently Vice Chair. He is both a current and past parent of BSS.
Bradley Sherman
Bradley Sherman is co-founder and chief executive officer of Aver Media LP, a private bank specializing in the media sector. Prior to founding Aver Media, Mr. Sherman was a partner in both Grosvenor Park Partnership and Sentinel Hill Ventures Corporation, international industry leaders in providing structured financing to the international filmed entertainment community. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California and Osgoode Hall Law School. He has served as a Governor since 2003 and is both a current and past parent of BSS.
Cathy Spoel
Cathy Spoel is a lawyer with more than 15 years of experience in administrative law, with a focus on land use planning, environmental, municipal and energy law. Since graduating from the Faculty of Law in 1981, Ms. Spoel has become passionate about running, which prompted her to establish Friends of Toronto Track and Field, a non-profit organization that supports and promotes the sport. She holds a degree in mathematics and a Master’s in law. Ms. Spoel has been a BSS Governor since 2006 and is both a current and past parent of BSS.
Leslie STEPHENSON ’85, Ex-Officio, International Governor
Since graduating from BSS, Leslie STEPHENSON ’85 has worked in the financial services industry in leadership roles at London Life and at Manulife Financial in the Canadian and U.S. divisions. For the last four years, she has worked for HSBC in Asia and has held senior management positions in Hong Kong, Vietnam and Korea. Ms. Stephenson has been an active volunteer in a number of organizations both in Canada and Asia. She is a past Chair of the Old Girls’ Executive and is currently serving on the board of the Friends of BSS Hong Kong. She has been a BSS Governor since October 2009.
Kate BERGHUIS Stevenson ’81, Ex-Officio
Kate BERGHUIS Stevenson ’81 has 25 years of experience as a senior finance executive for large, multinational corporations. She serves on a number of corporate boards based in Canada and the U.S. She was formerly Treasurer of Nortel Networks, and prior to that worked in corporate finance. She holds an AB from Harvard. Herself a BSS Old Girl, Ms. Stevenson has an extensive family legacy at BSS including her grandmother, sister and daughter, who is a current student at the School. Ms. Stevenson joined the BSS Board of Governors in 2003, and previously served as Board Chair.
Cherry Tabb
Cherry Tabb, a healthcare entrepreneur in Canada and the US, is CEO and co-founder of the Herzig Eye Institute, a world-renowned leader in advanced cataract and refractive surgery. In 1995, she formed a partnership with Dr. Sheldon Herzig and co-founded the Herzig Eye Institute in Toronto. Under Ms. Tabb’s leadership and Dr. Herzig’s surgical expertise, the Institute has become one of the largest custom vision correction centres in North America. Ms. Tabb is actively involved in many community organizations and serves as a member of several not for profit boards. She joined the BSS Board of Governors in 2011 and is a parent at the School.
Cindy TRIPP ’82
Cindy TRIPP ’82 has been an institutional trader at GMP for over 14 years, joining the firm at its infancy. Prior to GMP, she was an institutional equity trader in Toronto and New York. Now as Director of Institutional Client Management, Ms. Tripp ensures that GMP’s service and product offerings meet the evolving demands of its clients. She has been a BSS Governor since 2010, and is a BSS Old Girl and current parent.
Rev. Canon Peter Walker, Ex-Officio, Representing Archbishop Johnson
Representing Bishop Johnson, the Anglican Archbishop of Toronto, the Reverend Canon Peter Walker was appointed Incumbent of Grace Church on-the- Hill in November 2009. Canon Walker was born in Toronto and educated at Lakefield College School. After completing his theological studies at Oxford, he served a curacy at Christ Church Deer Park, and has since served successive Incumbencies at Pickering, Don Mills, and at Cobourg. He joined the BSS Board of Governors in 2011.

Richard Bradlow
Richard Bradlow is a Partner at Penfund Management Ltd. He and his wife, Jennifer, are current BSS parents and Ms. Bradlow is an active volunteer in the Junior School. Mr. Bradlow has served as a Trustee since September of 2008 and has been an active contributor on the Disbursement Committee, as well as serving, along with his wife, as Co-Chair of the Junior School Annual Fund.
Brendan Caldwell
Brendan Caldwell is the President/CEO of Caldwell Investment Management Ltd. He and his wife, Sandra, are current BSS parents and Ms. Caldwell is an active volunteer in the Junior School. Mr. Caldwell has served as a Trustee since September 2007 and has been a generous supporter of the School. His mother, Dorothy BOYLEN Caldwell ’62, is a BSS Old Girl.
Gabrielle CRISANTE ’84
Gabrielle CRISANTE ’84 holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree and an MBA from U of T. She has over ten years of combined work experience in the fields of architectural design and corporate marketing and is currently working as a realtor at Chestnut Park. Ms. Crisante is a BSS Old Girl and has an extensive family legacy at the School; her four older sisters are all BSS alumnae. Ms. Crisante sits on the Board of Trustees representing the Old Girls.
Mary Deacon
Mary Deacon joined the Board in September 2009 and chairs the Governance Committee. Ms. Deacon is an acknowledged leader and champion of social responsibility and community engagement and is Chair of the Bell Mental Health Initiative, Canada’s largest corporate program in support of mental health. She is a current parent at the School.
Samuel Duboc
Sam Duboc joined the BSS Board of Trustees in September 2011. As Founder of EdgeStone Capital Partners, Mr. Duboc successfully built one of Canada’s leading private equity firms. He also co-founded the Loyalty Management Group (Air Miles). He is active in the community and serves on several not for profit and corporate boards including Pathways to Education Canada, where he is the co-founder and Chairman. Mr. Duboc holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Tufts University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is a current parent at the School.
Amoryn ENGEL ’90
Amoryn ENGEL ’90 is a BSS Old Girl and has served as a Trustee since September 2007. She presently works as the society editor for both the National Post and Hello! Canada. In October 2009, Ms. Engel challenged Old Girls to make donations at the $500+ level, to a bursary or Endowment Fund, and she would match those gifts to the total of her $100,000 pledge to the BENGEL bursary fund. This challenge was successfully met by the BSS Old Girl community.
Andrew Federer
Andrew Federer is currently Managing Director for RBC Capital Markets. His wife, Andrea ODETTE-Federer, is a BSS Old Girl from the class of 1979. Current BSS parents, Mr. and Mrs. Federer are generous supporters and active volunteers at the School. Mr. Federer has served as a Trustee since September 2005 and has chaired both the Disbursement and Development Committees. Mrs. Federer is a Co-Chair of the BSS Parent Association for 2011/12.
Kosty Gilis
Kosty Gilis joined the BSS Board of Trustees in September 2011. He is a Managing Director at Onex Corporation where he focuses on investments in the diversified industrial and business services sectors. Mr. Gilis holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BS in Economics from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He became a BSS Trustee in 2011 and is a current parent at the School.
Catherine SMALLMAN Grant ’84
Catherine SMALLMAN Grant ’84 has served BSS for many years as a volunteer for the Parent Association and is a Co-chair of the BSS Parent Association for 2011/12. She has worked as a lawyer at Smith, Lyons, Torrance, Stevenson and Mayer and The Toronto Stock Exchange. She is a BSS Old Girl and current parent at the School. Her family has a rich history with BSS; her sister, mother-in-law, three sister-in-laws, niece, cousins and great grandmother are Old Girls, and her mother, Lois Smallman, was a Past Trustee. Ms. Grant’s sister Anne SMALLMAN Gallagher ’81 is Co-Chair of the Old Girls’ Executive Committee.

Pierre Lassonde
Pierre Lassonde is recognized as one of Canada’s foremost experts in the area of mining and precious metals. He co-founded Franco-Nevada Mining Corporation in 1982 with Seymour Schulich and has been the chairman there since 2007. Among his many accomplishments are four Honourary Doctorates in both Engineering and Business. He was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2001. Mr. Lassonde has served as a BSS Trustee since 2010 and is a current parent.
Jim Mountain
Jim Mountain is the co-founder of Mountain Fowler Asset Management. He has been a BSS Trustee since 2006 and served for several years as Chair of the Investment Committee. Mr. Mountain and his wife, Joanne, have generously established The Mountain Family Bursary Fund to support the School’s Financial Aid. Their daughter is a graduate of BSS.
Heather Regent
Heather Regent is an active volunteer at the School and has served as a Trustee since 2009. She and her husband, Aaron, are current BSS parents and have generously established The Regent Family Fund to support the School’s Financial Aid.
Paul Rivett
Paul Rivett is currently Vice President and Chief Legal Officer of Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd., and also serves as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Hamblin Watsa Investment Counsel Ltd. He has served as an attorney at two of North America’s most prominent law firms: Shearman & Sterling LLP and Blake, Cassels and Graydon LLP, and has taught as an Adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School. Mr. Rivett sits on the boards of Abitibibowater, the Brick, Mega Brands, Oahu Publications and KW Japan. Mr. Rivett has served as a Trustee since 2010 and is a parent at the School.
Martha ROGERS ’90
Martha ROGERS ’90 is a BSS Old Girl. Her family has a rich history with the School: her siblings all went to BSS; Lisa from the class of 1986, Melinda from the class of 1989, and Edward, who is an Old Boy and current parent. Her mother, Loretta, was a longstanding member of the BSS Board of Trustees, where she also served as Chair. Ms. Rogers and her family are generous supporters of the School, and she has served as a Trustee since 2008.
Elizabeth VANSTONE ’64
Elizabeth VANSTONE ’64 is a BSS Old Girl and recently retired from her position as an Investment Advisor for RBC Investments. She has served as a Trustee since 2009.
