Mathematics

The BSS Mathematics department engages all students and equips them to thrive in an increasingly data driven society. We believe the study of mathematics offers a unique and important way of interpreting the world around us. At BSS we bring accuracy and rigor to the quest for discovering patterns in observations. Through engaging inquiry, experimentation, collaboration and discussions students acquire mathematical knowledge that is meaningful and powerful in application.

Designed to meet the specific needs of female learners, math at BSS inspires girls to:

  • Make Connections
  • Be Curious
  • Take Risks
  • Be Persistent
  • Value Process
  • Interpret Results / Consider context
  • Embrace Technology
  • Appreciate Numeracy

In addition to a challenging course of study BSS provides many opportunities for students to continue their interest in math. These include:

Math Olympics: A weekly club for students in Grades 7 and 8 where girls gain experience in friendly competitions with Upper Canada College students and in formal Participation in the Ontario Math Olympics.

Math Society: A weekly club for students in Grades 9 to 12 where collaboration/friendly competitions with and against Upper Canada College and participation in math Speaker Series at UCC occur.

Math Contests: Students in Grades 7 to 12 are encouraged and provided opportunities to write numerous math competitions throughout the year including but not limited to: Gauss, Pascal, Cayley, Fermat, Galois, Hypatia and Euclid.

Advanced Placement Statistics with Data Management: Students in Grades 11 or 12 can earn university level credit through Advanced Placement Statistics.

Advanced Placement Calculus with Vectors: Students in Grade 12 can earn university level credit through Advanced Placement Calculus (AB).

The Math Tutorial Centre: At BSS we pride ourselves on being a community of math learners and place a strong emphasis on collaboration. The math tutorial centres for both the middle school and senior school foster this by providing students with a place to come together to discuss their work both with each other and with various members of the math faculty. The tutorial centres are open eight times per week.
