Service Learning

Service Learning is an integral part of the BSS program. Girls learn the importance of volunteerism, gain an awareness of the needs of others and have authentic and meaningful experiences through their involvement in local and global communities. Students have told us time and time again how much they’ve learned and enriched their own lives by helping others and giving back to their community.

All students in Grades 9 to 12 complete at least 40 hours of service before graduation, though many students enjoy this component of school life immensely and as a result become involved in additional Service Learning projects and initiatives, thereby completing hours above and beyond the minimum requirements.

Students in Grades 7 and 8 are strongly encouraged to begin their volunteering program, and the service work they participate in can be accredited towards achieving the Statten and Northway Awards.

Both short and long-term volunteer opportunities in the outside community are promoted throughout the year, and the Service Learning Office is full of brochures and binders for students to browse through for ideas.

The Service Learning Student Council also works hard to ensure that interesting volunteer opportunities are available for students to participate in.
