Applications

Our Student Services team is there to help our students navigate the often complicated university application process and help them gain admission to the school of their choice.

Applying to an Ontario University
All applications to Ontario Universities are submitted electronically through the Ontario University Application Centre (OUAC). Students Services forwards OUAC an academic history for each student; this includes all current year courses and final marks for all Level 3 and 4 courses.  While admission is largely based on the average of a student’s “top 6” Grade 12 courses (which must include program pre-requisites), some schools and programs will consider additional factors (essay writing, portfolio, auditions, extra-curriculars…etc) in determining a student’s admissibility.

Applying to a Canadian University outside Ontario
All applications to Canadian universities outside Ontario are completed online on the individual university website. Students need to check the deadlines as these vary year to year. While admission is largely based on the average of a student’s “top 5-6” Grade 12 courses (which must include program pre-requisites), some schools and programs will consider additional factors (essay writing, portfolio, auditions, extra-curriculars…etc) in determining a student’s admissibility.

Applying to a US University
US applications tend to be comprehensive and require a great deal of preparation. Students should meet with their counsellor in Grade 11 to discuss criteria, requirements and school choices.

While Grade 9 to 12 marks are very important, American universities consider other factors including:

  • Marks in college preparation courses;
  • Rigour of academic program;
  • Course/program requirements;
  • SAT I/SAT II/ACT results;
  • APs;
  • Essay/Writing sample;
  • Counsellor and teacher recommendations;
  • Extra-curricular activities/Community Service;
  • Interview.

Applying to a UK University
British schools use a common application form (UCAS) on which students can apply to as many as five schools. The British schools consider a number of factors in a student’s application:

  • Their Grade 11 and 12 marks in university preparation courses;
  • The rigour of their academic program;
  • Completion of specific course requirements;
  • AP and SAT/ACT results (not required, but helpful);
  • Personal statement;
  • Experiences and interests relevant to the subjects they wish to study;
  • Their interview (if required);
  • Letter of reference.

The application is straightforward but very specific in what it requires and the manner in which it must be completed. Students meet with their counsellor to learn how to log on and complete the application, and our counsellors are there to ensure that students have everything they need to complete this process as smoothly as possible.
