Helping young women be leaders
As a student, Devon KIRK ’01 took advantage of everything that BSS had to offer.
Joining the school in Grade 7, she participated in soccer, volleyball, swimming, theatre and band. Off-campus extracurriculars were also highlights of her life at BSS: a Grade 8 exchange to Paris, France, where she lived with a family on their riverboat along the Seine; a trip to Bermuda with her field hockey team; and outdoor adventure trips with Physical Education teacher Ms. Fisher. “Looking back at my BSS education, what stands out for me is the breadth of experiences,” says Kirk.
Kirk went on to earn a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University, then a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School. After practising law in London, England, for two years, she returned to Canada and has worked for CPP Invest-ment for the past nine years. She is now married and has a three-year-old daughter.
Today, Kirk stays connected to BSS as a donor and as a new member of the Board of Governors. She says both efforts are about giving back in different ways. “I have a lot of respect for the commitments teachers and staff make. I want to support their vision for the school, and ensure they have great resources to do that,” says Kirk, adding that she sees the same high quality in the current teachers and staff as she recalls from her own time as a student.
Joining BSS governance has given her a new perspective on the school, and she feels even more aligned with our mission. “BSS is a welcoming environment that wants to see every community member thriving,” she says. Kirk adds that she supports Financial Assistance because it widens opportunities for students who need it. “I’m most motivated by the idea of giving many young women access to an incredible education, to help them be leaders in the future.”
