Chapel at BSS embodies our values of honouring our heritage and embracing change.
Our Chapel program is rooted in the Anglican tradition, while remaining responsive to the diverse and evolving nature of our community. As a part of student life, Chapel is a place to learn about the religious and spiritual heritages that reflect our student body. It provides a space for all students to cultivate empathy through understanding and to learn about the many religious and spiritual backgrounds at BSS and in the wider city of Toronto. Students explore questions related to meaning, purpose and values. They encounter diverse beliefs, traditions and perspectives, and learn to live in community with others. Through this, they develop and strengthen the skills to ethically navigate an increasingly complex world.

Chapel also plays a vital role in enhancing student well-being and belonging. Through Chapel services, students forge meaningful connections with their peers, faculty and the broader community that nurture their spiritual, emotional and social well-being. By reflecting on our shared values and diverse experiences, students develop empathy, resilience and self-awareness, laying the groundwork for a life of fulfillment and purpose.

Weekly Chapel Services

Students at BSS attend Chapel once a week. Chapels are an inclusive version of the Anglican morning prayer service, consisting of prayers, readings, reflections and music led by members of the Chapel Council, other students and our Chaplain. Each service begins with a Land Acknowledgement as part of our commitment to fostering reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. Students have the opportunity to share their insights and experiences as thought-leaders amongst their peers. They learn about the diverse religious and spiritual traditions within our student body and wider community, and encounter perspectives from historically marginalized groups through student-led DEIB initiatives, such as Black History and Excellence Month, Pride and Mental Health Awareness Week.

  • Chapel Council

The Chapel Council offers students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills while contributing to the school’s spiritual community. Members advise the Chaplain on relevant Chapel themes and advocate for students’ concerns. They also help plan and lead services, including writing and giving reflections and prayers.
  • Traditional Gatherings

We host special gatherings in addition to our weekly Chapels, where families of all religious affiliations can attend to support an inclusive school culture. Traditions like the Opening and Closing Chapels, the Remembrance Day Service and the Nativity mark important milestones in the school year, bring together generations of the BSS community and remind students of the value of ritual.
