At BSS, we recognize that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education presents both exciting possibilities and ethical questions.
Guided by age-appropriateness and the development of foundational skills, we ensure AI enhances learning while prioritizing student growth and digital citizenship.
For our younger students in JK - Grade 8, AI use is restricted, as most tools (such as ChatGPT) are not age appropriate. In Middle School, while classroom use remains limited, conversations about AI’s potential and ethical considerations have begun. These discussions help students understand AI’s capabilities and prepare them to engage responsibly as they grow.
In Grades 9 - 12, we employ a framework that outlines when students can incorporate AI into their learning across all subject areas. For each task or experience students engage in, teachers clearly indicate AI integration with a red, yellow or green light. A red light means students cannot use AI to complete this task and should seek support from their teacher if they are stuck. A yellow light indicates that there might be some ways to use AI purposefully and ethically. A green light means students are encouraged to use AI, get help from their teacher to choose the right tools, and give credit when they use it.
For example, in courses like AP Research, social sciences, English and computer science, AI assists with tasks such as generating citations, summarizing large texts or analyzing and enhancing code. Students are taught to use AI thoughtfully, enhancing their work after mastering core skills. For example, English students engineer prompts and critique AI-generated texts to strengthen their analytical abilities.
In other subjects, AI serves as a tool for independent study, helping students consolidate knowledge. In science and math, for example, students are using problems they have solved in class as prompts to generate more problems on similar topics and levels, helping them master concepts through practice.
Ethics underpin all AI-related initiatives at BSS. Conversations about responsible use and representation equip students to contribute meaningfully to the development of AI technology. Digital citizenship lessons begin in the younger grades and expand in Senior School, aligning with global best practices and research-informed curriculum.
Our faculty play a key role. Through professional learning opportunities, teachers stay updated on AI’s educational applications, ensuring thoughtful integration in the classroom. By emphasizing a skills-first approach and ethical practices, BSS prepares students to navigate AI’s opportunities and challenges with confidence and responsibility, fostering a generation ready to lead in a rapidly evolving world.
