STEM learning thrives at BSS, where students engage in interdisciplinary projects in innovative learning spaces. Discover the exciting learning happening in some of our entry grades.
In Grade 1, students have been developing their inquiry skills through a project for the Senior Kindergarten class, who have recently cared for quail eggs. Observing the chick hatching process, the Grade 1 students explored questions like, “Why do chicks have different markings?” They made observational drawings, inquired about different quail species and created presentation posters. They shared their findings with the Senior Kindergarten class, fostering community connections while honing inquiry, research and presentation skills. This student-led project stemmed from their curiosity and strengthened cross-grade collaboration.
In Grade 6 Investigative Research, students recently completed an egg drop challenge designed to test their problem-solving and engineering skills. Working independently in groups without teacher guidance, they sketched designs, sourced recyclable materials and built contraptions to protect their egg from a high drop. Through inquiry, they explored questions like whether slowing a fall or cushioning impact offered better protection. Most eggs landed safely, with successful designs often using parachutes. This hands-on project encouraged design thinking, experimentation, and collaboration, making the learning both fun and impactful.
In Grade 9 science, students are diving into the electricity unit by designing and testing circuits. They identified and created electrical plans, then brought their designs to life using wires, buzzers, light bulbs and connectors. Once functional, students experimented by adjusting voltage and measuring electrical output with multimeters. Through collaborative activities, they used their foundational skills to build both series and parallel circuits, troubleshoot issues and calculate electrical values. This interactive approach deepens their understanding of key concepts while fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
